Students will be introduced to the reading and writing skills required to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic settings.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Locate and process main ideas and supporting details in moderately complex academic texts
LO2: Write a text under test conditions in English for an academic purpose
Content
• Identify main ideas and supporting details of moderately complex written academic texts
• Apply reading strategies
• Respond to ideas in moderately complex written academic texts
• Identify and summarise arguments and information
• Deduce meaning of new vocabulary from context and word parts
• Make notes from written academic texts
• Analyse essay questions
• Identify and produce academic writing in different genres (e.g. argument, problem-solution essays)
• Write clear introductions and conclusions
• Write structured academic paragraphs with clear topic sentences
• Define and identify instances of plagiarism
• Follow basic referencing conventions (e.g. in-text citations, reporting verbs , reference list)
• Use punctuation appropriate to the academic context (e.g. quotation marks, italicising, brackets, colons and semi-colons)
• Use a range of simple, compound and complex sentence structures
• A range of specialised vocabulary relevant to the academic and/or professional field
• Read extensive texts
• New General Service List, first 2500 words; New Academic Word List

In order to pass a course, students must:
• Meet all course learning outcomes
• Pass all summative assessments
