Prescription
This module aims to develop listening skills to meet common needs of students at a CEFR A1 level. This will enable students to understand everyday expressions in routine social interactions concerning self, family and immediate concrete surroundings. They will be able to follow speech which is very slow and carefully articulated, with long pauses for him/her to assimilate meaning. The student will be able to understand instructions addressed carefully and slowly to him/her and follow short, simple directions.

Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate ability to follow short conversations in everyday situations on topics concerning self, family and immediate surroundings, and understanding gist, context and the relationship between speakers.
Demonstrate understanding of simple questions, statements, accounts, narratives and/or single-step instructions spoken carefully and slowly.
Demonstrate ability to follow short, simple directions and explanations.
Extract key information in conversations, including but not limited to numbers, prices and times to complete a simple task.
Content
Phonological features
-phonological detail to distinguish between similar words.
-feelings and attitudes expressed through stress and intonation.

Range
-key grammatical forms used in very common everyday familiar contexts
-familiar words and very basic phrases concerning self, family and immediate concrete surroundings.
Gist
-main ideas of short explanations and conversations
-short conversations that allow for identification of speakers, context and topic.

Detail
-key words, numbers and spellings that can be extracted from short statements and explanations.

Assessment Criteria
The portfolio is comprised of multiple assessment tasks, not tests alone. Assessment will be in a highly supportive environment (see NZQA/NZCEL Guiding Document). To pass this module, students must attempt and pass all assessment tasks.
