Analyse New Zealand garden design, identifying global and historical influences.
Investigate sustainable garden design incorporating access for people and vehicles.
Consistently determine client requirements regarding a garden site and its environment.
Establish and demonstrate the garden design process.
Interpret and apply the legislation relating to garden design in New Zealand.
Content
-NZ garden design, international historical style influences.
-Five principles of design; unity, simplicity, balance, scale and proportion and focus, and importance of form following function.
-Spatial sensation, garden rooms; enclosure, walls, floors, ceilings, sense of place, sustainable design i.e. layout and material choices.
-Access and movement patterns; pedestrian, vehicular, enhancing, material choices and effects, physical and psychological influences.
-Client interviews; communication techniques, needs and wants, questionnaires.
-Site analysis; recording environmental and surrounding activities.
-Site measuring; recording site measurements, tape measuring.
-The design process; client and site analysis, functional bubble diagrams, grid and freeform studies, concept design and refinement, master planning.
-NZ Legislation relating to garden design, local council rules and planning restrictions.
-Professional practice attributes: sustainable practices; effective communication skills; professional and ethical behaviour; teamwork; accurate record-keeping.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching and learning methods will be face to face delivery including workshops, project based interactive tasks, with group sessions, tutorials, and creation of portfolios of evidence.

Portfolio of Evidence 100
The weight of the overall assessment is equally distributed across learning outcomes.
The portfolio of evidence will demonstrate the achievement of the required knowledge, competencies and capabilities across all learning outcomes.
