To provide students with essential knowledge of electrical safety, the HSE Act and how it impacts on electrical workers, hazard identification and management, safe and correct use of testing equipment and tools within an electrotechnology or telecommunications environment.

Learning Outcomes
1:Demonstrate knowledge of the hazardous nature of electricity and of safety management of workplace hazards in an electrotechnology or telecommunications environment
2:Demonstrate elementary knowledge of the Health and Safety in Employment Act in relation to working in an electrotechnology or telecommunications environment
3:Demonstrate knowledge of general safety practices and special hazards and fire specific in an electrotechnology or telecommunications environment
4:Demonstrate knowledge of safe use of tools and test equipment in an electrotechnology or telecommunications environment
5:Demonstrate knowledge of rules, procedures, and use of instruments to ensure the continued safety of electrotechnology or telecommunications technicians
6:Demonstrate knowledge of initial response to an accident involving electricity that apply to persons working in an electrotechnology or telecommunications environment and analyse industry relevant incidents

-Electricity and the hazards it poses
-The Health and Safety in Employment Act and how it relates to work in and industrial atmosphere
-safe management of workplace hazards and general safety practices
-special hazards and fire related to electrical situations
-safe use of tools and test equipment
-rules and procedures for safe use of test instruments
-initial response to incidents involving electricity
-analysis of industry relevant incidents
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be by way of structured distance learning, either by hardcopy written material and assessments or by on-line learning and assessment. Students will be encouraged to research some aspects by way of library/database and/or internet searches for pertinent material
