Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Explain and integrate knowledge of pathophysiology and biopsychosociocultural factors to inform the holistic evaluation of people presenting with varied neurological conditions.
2. Develop and apply advanced clinical reasoning skills and critically reflect on behaviour change, motivation and necessary lifestyle adaptations required for those presenting with varied neurological conditions.
3. Demonstrate evidence-informed and person-centred assessment and managemen t practices in delivering integrative care approaches for those presenting with varied neurological conditions.
4. Communicate in an effective and culturally responsive manner that adapts to the needs of those with varied neurological conditions.
5. Critically appraise the role of the client, whanau and other health and social care professionals involved in the collaborative management of people presenting with varied neurological conditions.
Content: - Neuroanatomical localisation of cerebral, brainstem and peripheral lesions; symptomatology following brain and spinal cord damage resulting from traumatic and degenerative processes of the nervous system
- Advanced information gathering/history taking and physical examination procedures for clients presenting with varied neurological conditions
- Culturally appropriate management of Maori and Pasifika clients presenting with varied neurological conditions and comorbidities
- Advanced clinical reasoning in neurological physiotherapy practice in relation to the total management of specific client cases
- Further outcome measures for neurological conditions
- Aetiology, pathology and symptomatology of selected neurological conditions; including medical and surgical management
- Principles of neurological rehabilitation practice related to selected neurological conditions; biological basis and empirical evidence for physiotherapy interventions
- Advanced physiotherapeutic management of clients with selected neurological conditions
- Optimisation of motor performance following neurological disorders; advanced skills in training motor/sensory deficits in functional activities
- Rehabilitation: stages of management (primary, secondary and tertiary)
- Assessment, acute management and rehabilitation of selected neurological conditions, which may include, but is not limited to: traumatic brain injury, including concussion, cerebellar ataxia, vestibular disorders, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, basal ganglia conditions, dystonia, dyskinesia, , multiple sclerosis, , functional neurological disorder , motor neurone disease, and other degenerative neurological conditions
- Behaviour change, motivation and necessary lifestyle adaptations required for those presenting with varied neurological conditions.- Pharmacology in the management of neurological conditions
- Roles of other health professionals in team management of varied neurological conditions, including team decision making and service delivery options
- Advocating for the neurological client: promoting health and preventing secondary dysfunction/disability
Assessment Criteria: Practice Based Assessment - this assessment must be passed to pass the module.
The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
