Learning Outcomes
1. Critically examine biomedical and behavioural scientific knowledge and relevant lifespan, gender, cultural, legal and ethical factors in the context of the evaluation and management of complex neurological disorders.
2. Develop advanced clinical reasoning skills, critical thinking and decision making in complex neurological physiotherapy practice.
3. Examine, manage and evaluate the complex neurological client using advanced subjective and physical examination process and techniques.
4. Communicate in an effective and culturally responsive manner to promote shared-decision making in practice.
5. Critically examine the role of the client, whaanau and other health and social care professionals in the interprofessional team for the holistic management of neurological clients.
Content
Neuroanatomical localisation of cerebral, brainstem and peripheral lesions; symptomatology following brain and spinal cord damage resulting from traumatic and degenerative processes of the nervous system
Advanced information gathering/history taking and physical examination procedures for clients presenting with complex neurological disorders
Culturally appropriate management of Maaori and Pasifika clients presenting with complex neurological disorders and comorbidities
Advanced clinical reasoning in neurological physiotherapy practice in relation to the total management of specific client cases
Further outcome measures for neurological disorders
Aetiology, pathology and symptomatology of selected neurological conditions; medical and surgical management
Principles of neurological rehabilitation practice related to selected neurological conditions; biological basis and empirical evidence for physiotherapy interventions
Advanced physiotherapeutic management of clients with selected neurological conditions
Optimization of motor performance following neurological disorders; advanced skills in training motor/sensory deficits in all functional activities
Rehabilitation: stages of management (primary, secondary and tertiary)
Assessment, acute management and rehabilitation of selected neurological disorders, which may include, but is not limited to: traumatic brain injury, ataxia and in coordination, vestibular disorders, spinal cord injury, parkinsonism, basal ganglia disorders, dystonia, akinesia, bradykinesia, multiple sclerosis, falls risk in the elderly, degenerative neurological disorders, and motor neurone disease
Pharmacology in the management of neurological conditions
Record keeping in client management and service delivery
Roles of other health professionals in team management of complex neurological disorders, including team decision making and service delivery options
Advocating for the neurological client: promoting health and preventing secondary dysfunction/disability
Assessment Criteria
Practice Based Assessment - this assessment must be passed to pass the module.
The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
