Complications and Conditions
To demonstrate midwifery knowledge and skills required to provide midwifery care for the woman/waahine and/or baby experiencing health complications and conditions throughout the childbirth continuum, including midwifery management of obstetric emergencies and deviations from normal.

- May include: Project-based Learning; Flipped Classroom; Blended Learning; Work-integrated Learning; Inclusive Practices.
Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation.
- Learning Outcomes
- 1. Examine the pathophysiology of complications and conditions affecting the childbirth continuum including planning and implementing care for the woman/waahine and/or baby.
2. Identify and examine the impact of deviations, complications or unexpected outcomes on the woman’s experience of childbirth, including the longer-term implications of the baby with additional needs and the unwell newborn.
3. Analyse the diagnosis, referral criteria and management of complications and conditions relevant to the woman/waahine and/or baby.
4. Demonstrate professional communication, documentation, and interprofessional collaboration.
5. Apply relevant research and literature to midwifery care of the woman/waahine and/or baby experiencing complications and conditions.
- • Pathophysiology and management of named medical and obstetric conditions and complications affecting the woman/waahine and/or her baby
• Midwifery management of obstetric emergencies and deviations from normal

• Referral and interprofessional collaboration and care when the woman/waahine and/or baby is experiencing complications or conditions
• Infant feeding in complex situations including supporting guidelines/frameworks for best practice and application to the baby with special needs

- Assessment Criteria
- The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
