This module is designed to enable practitioners to develop advanced specialist knowledge and skills in a particular field of professional practice. Students will define and critically evaluate a scope of practice within this field and critique the research and evidence base that informs therapeutic relationships and interventions with specific populations.Specialist fields of practice could include mental health, disability, alcohol use and addictions, domestic violence and statutory agency work

Upon successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Define and critically evaluate a scope of professional practice with a specific population

2. Critically examine structural, historical, legislative political influences on professional practice in a specialist field

3. Critically evaluate specialist knowledge, theory, practice approaches/models and skills utilised in the field of practice

4. Assess the impact of the Treaty of Waitangi and/or cultural safety on service delivery within the chosen field of practice

5. Critically analyse and evaluate a programme of service delivery within the chosen field of practice

- Models of practice and service delivery with specific populations
- Structural analysis of institutional, policy and statutory influences
- Ethical, legal and professional responsibilities for practice
- Application of the Treaty of Waitangi
- Cultural safety
- Practice assessment and intervention strategies
- Evidence, research and practice experience as bases for practice
- Evaluation of service delivery programmes
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching and learning methods will involve theoretical and online sessions including tutorials, workshops, group activities, discussion, independent learning, and assignments.
