The aim of this module is to develop students' ability to understand plant biology and the impact of pests and diseases, and the various properties of soil and how they influence plant growth.

- Understand and describe plant anatomy, morphology, growth processes and life cycles
Identify common and important pests and diseases of amenity trees, their control measures and the natural responses of trees
Identify common non-disease causing fungi associated with trees
Describe the formation and properties of soil, and the influence on plant growth
Describe the biosecurity system in New Zealand - Content
- -Natural tree responses to stress caused by any agency in terms of immediate and long term responses.
-Common signs and/or symptoms of pests, disease or disorder, diagnosis and quarantine.
-Life cycles of disease in terms of vulnerable points allowing control.
-Control measures that give both immediate and long term protection.
-The biosecurity system in New Zealand.
-Soils - formation, texture, structure, modification, management, sustainability, suitability for plant growth.
-Tree adaption to growing environments and how these adaptations can be used in tree management.
-Tree growth processes. - Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Teaching and learning methods will be face to face delivery including workshops, project based interactive tasks, with group sessions, tutorials, and creation of portfolios of evidence.
