The aim of this module is to develop further the breadth of knowledge base of students so they can provide safe, competent and sensitive midwifery care within the scope of normal childbirth.

On completion of this module students will be able to:
1.Discuss the development, anatomy and physiology of the foetus and placenta and their inter-relationship.
2.Demonstrate evidence based knowledge and critical thinking required to provide safe, competent midwifery practice during the normal childbirth experience.
3.Apply current theories of the physiology of pain and consider appropriate strategies to work with women and their pain in labour.
4.Identify the potential for normal processes to be disrupted and to analyse the nature of these disruptions and formulate appropriate responses to resolve problems.
5.Apply critical thinking and problem solving skills in the management of normal childbirth with accountability for determining and achieving outcomes.
Content
Content:
- Foetal growth and development.
- Physiology of the developing foetal/maternal relationship, eg' placenta and foetal development.
- Physiology of the developing foetal/maternal relationships, eg' effects of smoking, drugs, environment and psychological effects.
- Physiology and patho-physiology of pregnancy, birth and the puerperium.
- Recognition of normal and difference with regard to the new born.
- Planning, implementing and evaluating midwifery care, and deciding when referral is appropriate within the guidelines of Section 88.
- Complementary therapies that are common in midwifery practice.
- Theories of pain and working with pain.
- Supporting women to work with pain in labour Midwifery skills of practice during labour and birth, eg;
- Artificial rupture of membranes
- Midwifery management of Epidural
- Congenital hip check
- I.V. cannulation and fluid management
- Prescribing medications/drug calculations
- Assessment of Meconium liquor
- Guthrie test
- CTG and Intermittent auscultation of foetal heart
- Venepuncture
- Catheterisation
- Care of first, second and third stage normal labour
- Perineal Repair
- Pharmacology related to midwifery care during the childbirth continuum,
- Documentation.
- Immunisation

- Care of third stage (physiological and active)

- Management of emergency situations, eg; shock, cord prolapse, shoulder dystocia,
retained placenta, APH, PPH, uterine rupture, maternal resuscitation, neonatal
resuscitation

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will include lectures, narrative tutorials, online exercises and independent study.
Recommended Readings
A list of current readings will be provided on Moodle. However, students are expected to read widely.

Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement based tasks. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.

A 50 pass is required within each science and midwifery component of the test and exam to pass the module.
