The aim of this module is to introduce students to a variety of perspectives of knowledge, each coming from a different philosophical base. Its purpose is to question notions of 'truth', 'certainty' and the taken for granted assumptions of the social and practice world. It provides a strong foundation for analysis of the knowing of midwifery practice and enhances understanding of research paradigm.

3. Explain the social construction of childbirth, midwifery and professional status.
4. Describe the interface between ways of knowing and midwifery practice.

Teaching strategies and learning methods will include lectures, tutorials, online exercises and independent study.
Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement based tasks. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.
