This module aims to develop theoretically informed proficiency as an early childhood teacher, through critical reflection on experience in an early childhood licenced service. This module will enable students to demonstrate their proficient understanding of praxis, where theory derives from practice and practice from theory. This module will enable students to critically select, apply, compare and extend on theory from other modules. It aims to develop effective skills for building and maintaining relationships with children and adults in the early childhood setting. The module aims to develop leadership skills suitable for the early childhood setting and maintain a community of learners within the student cohort.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:

1.Theoretically and philosophically justify teaching practice appropriate for the teaching
context and use reflection as a tool to build on, change or justify own teaching practice.

2. Critically select, implement, and take complete responsibility for, the integration of a broad
range of effective teaching strategies and techniques to meet individual and group learner
needs.

3. Competently and confidently use formative assessment processes to document and assess
children's learning.

4. Demonstrate effective skills for building and maintaining relationships with children and
adults within the early childhood environment.

5. Competently and confidently show in practice an understanding of Tikanga Maaori and use
of te reo Maaori.

6. Apply teaching methods which acknowledge the importance of equity and diversity through
inclusive practice and recognise and respond to inappropriate teaching practice.
Learning and Teaching Resource
- Academic staff with relevant qualifications, knowledge and skills in Early Childhood
Education
- On-line support
- 1:1 Lecturer visits and meeting 8 hours per student
- Allocation of an approved suitable mentor
- Agreement with Practicum Placement to support student with their study commitments,
including identification of the 12 hours per week that is dedicated to Practicum requirements
Content
The content of Practicum is embedded in the experiences, reflective activities, reading and dialogue undertaken by the student in the early childhood setting. The content of Practicum includes but is not limited to:

Reflective practice teaching techniques and strategies - (selection and application of basic techniques), use of te reo Maaori me ngaa- tikanga-a-iwi (at a level appropriate to the early childhood education environment, development of basic critical thinking skills, basic principles and understanding of praxis, relevant literature to support practice, introduction to Communities of Practice and Communities of Learners, introduction to equity, diversity, biculturalism and multiculturalism, using child observations and formative assessment for evidence based practice, basic concepts of positive guidance, verbal and non-verbal communication, introduction to Te Whaariki and early childhood education regulatory requirements and professional ethics.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in the Reflective Questions & Reflective Presentation assessment tasks and 50 or better in the TRIP Learning Story Development assessment task. Students must also meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement base tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 or better. All assessments must be completed.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Students are in Practicum placement that is licensed by the Ministry of Education for 12
hours per week for 1014 weeks of the academic semester, under the supervision of an approved Mentor
- 1:1 meeting with Visiting Lecturer
- 1x Taught class at the beginning of the academic semester
- 1x 2hr 1:1 lecturer visits
- E-Portfolio monitored by Visiting Lecturer
- Reflective practice, experiential learning in the Practicum setting, praxis, literature,
demonstration and instruction, self-directed learning, workshops and on-line participation
