This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of various types of curricula, and the socio-political and legislative influences on curriculum development and teaching in Aotearoa/New Zealand. It aims to develop knowledge of Western and Maori models of teaching. The module aims to develop knowledge and skills in ways to involve family, whanau and community in the early childhood education setting.

Content
The Aotearoa/New Zealand early childhood education curriculum and various curriculum models, theories of ZPD, scaffolding, and dispositions, advanced teaching techniques and strategies, socio-political influences on curriculum, the main political influences in Aotearoa/New Zealand, influences of left, right and third way politics, the prescriptive and framework curricula, concepts of banking education, emancipatory education and life-long learning, the development of Te Kohanga Reo, Mori participation in early childhood education, principles of partnership, participation and consultation in early childhood education services, communication skills, workshop facilitation skills (Sensori Saturday), legislation relevant to early childhood services, statutory agencies, and early childhood education support services.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is achievement based. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the assessment tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 or better.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:

1.Evaluate, compare and contrast the Aotearoa New Zealand early childhood education curriculum with other approaches of educational curricula.
2.Discuss socio-political influences on curriculum development.
3.Compare and contrast the main political influences on curriculum development in Aotearoa New Zealand.
4.Compare and contrast Western models of teaching and learning with Mori models of teaching and learning.
5.Develop strategies to increase family, whanau and community involvement in early childhood education..
