This module aims to develop competence as an early childhood teacher, through reflective experience in an early childhood licensed and chartered service and will enable students to develop and demonstrate understanding of praxis, where theory derives from practice and practice from theory. The module will enable students to apply and reflect on theory from other modules and develop communication skills for building and maintaining relationships with children and adults in the early childhood setting. The module aims to develop a Community of Learners within the student cohort.

Learning and Teaching Resource: Specific Teaching and Learning Resources

- Academic staff with relevant qualifications, knowledge and skills in Early Childhood
Education
- On-line support
- 1:1 Lecturer visits and meeting
- Allocation of an approved suitable mentor
- Agreement with Practicum Placement to support student with their study commitments,
including identification of the 12 hours per week that is dedicated to Practicum requirements.

Relevant required and recommended readings and resources will be updated annually prior to delivery of the module to ensure currency of the literature and resources. The annual required and recommended reading list will be provided to the students in Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) annual Booklist and Student Module Booklet.
Content: The content of Practicum is embedded in the experiences, reflective activities, reading and dialogue undertaken by the student in the early childhood setting. The content of Practicum includes but is not limited to:

Reflective practice teaching techniques and strategies - (selection and application of basic techniques), use of te reo Maaori me ngaa- tikanga-a-iwi (at a level appropriate to the early childhood education environment, development of basic critical thinking skills, basic principles and understanding of praxis, relevant literature to support practice, introduction to Communities of Practice and Communities of Learners, introduction to equity, diversity, biculturalism and multiculturalism, using child observations and formative assessment for evidence based practice, basic concepts of positive guidance, verbal and non-verbal communication, introduction to Te Whaariki and early childhood education regulatory requirements and professional ethics.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this module students will be able to:

1.Articulate the links between theoretical knowledge and teaching practice, including personal and professional qualities and the role of the early childhood teacher
2.Adeptly use formative assessment processes to document and assess children's learning.
3.Confidently and consistently implement appropriate positive guidance techniques.
4.Use and reflect on communication skills for building and maintaining relationships with children and adults.
5.Competently show in practice an understanding of Tikanga Mori and use of te reo Mori.
6.Show in practice an awareness of equity and diversity through inclusive practice and distinguish inappropriate teaching methods.
Assessment Criteria: Assessment in this module is mixed mode. All components must be completed to pass the module.
Teaching and Learning Strategy: Students are in Field-Based Practice placement that is licensed by the Ministry of Education for 12 hours per week for 10 weeks of the academic semester, under the supervision of an approved Mentor
1x Taught class at the beginning of the academic semester
2x 2hr 1:1 lecturer visits
E-Portfolio monitored by Visiting Lecturer
