Prescription
This module aims to explore the historical, social, cultural and political influences and impacts on the Aotearoa/New Zealand early childhood education curriculum and teaching environment. It aims to develop awareness, understanding and knowledge in regards to Maori as tangata whenua and the principles of partnership and participation inherent in te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Whariki.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:
1.Discuss and critique international influences on early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand.
2.Discuss and critique the history of early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand, including Mori models of teaching and learning.
3.Analyse and discuss the current social, cultural and political environment in Aotearoa New Zealand and their impacts on teaching in early childhood education.
4.Describe the key elements of culture, including the inter-relatedness of language, with a particular focus on the dual cultures of Aotearoa New Zealand, and examination of the unique place of Maori as Tangata Whenua.
5.Explain and discuss the concepts of society, social structure and socialisation, including gender issues such as the social construction of gender roles, feminism and men in early childhood education.
Content
International and historical perspectives and theories, the history of early childhood education, Te Whariki and early childhood education movements (playcentre, kindergarten, Kohanga Reo, language nests, unions, NZCA etc), Maori models of teaching and learning, social, cultural and political influences in Aotearoa/New Zealand, the relationships of state, church and family, culture and the relationship between culture and language, Maori and non-Maori culture, multiculturalism, Maori as tangata whenua and Te Tiriti o Waitangi (partnership and participation), Marae protocols (focused on Tainui), participation in a Noho Marae, bicultural communication and Te Reo Maori suitable for the early childhood education teaching environment.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is achievement based. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the assessment tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 or better.

- Agreement with Practicum placement to support student with their study commitments

Relevant required and recommended readings and resources will be updated annually prior to delivery of the module to ensure currency of the literature and resources. The annual required and recommended reading list will be provided to the students in Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) annual Booklist and Student Module Booklet.
