Prescription
This module aims to give students an introductory understanding of society, culture, identity and family/whnau and the context in which early childhood education occurs in Aotearoa/New Zealand. It will provide students with techniques and strategies for teaching children from diverse backgrounds and will give students an introductory understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it is implemented in early childhood education in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The module aims to introduce the concept of personal responsibility to Te Tiriti Waitangi.

Learning Outcomes
1.Apply the principles of Communities of Practice and whanaungatanga within their student whanau
2.Demonstrate an introductory understanding of bi-cultural & bi-lingual practice, diversity, bias, anti-bias, identity, equality, equity and social justice and how these relate to practice within an early childhood education setting.
3. Demonstrate introductory skills for effective communication and whakawhanaungatanga with a focus on the development of skills to apply introductory te reo Maori and tikanga Maori within an early childhood education setting.
4.Demonstrate an introductory understanding of the concepts of Ko Au (self-awareness), Tino rangatiratanga (self-management), Mana tangata (power relationships) and Whakapapa, iwi and hapu (agency).
5.Demonstrate an introductory understanding of positive guidance techniques which can be used with children within an early childhood education setting.
Content
Introduction to communities of practice and communities of learners, basic understanding of diversity, equality and equity, prejudice, bias and anti-bias, basic concepts of social justice, agency, power relations, relationships, effective communication, Te Reo Maori suitable for the early childhood education teaching environment, basic skills in self-awareness and self-management, stress, triggers and responses, children's behaviour in relation to child development and positive guidance, relevant early childhood education legislation.

Teaching and Learning Methods

- Team taught, lectures, tutorials, literature, reflective practice, experiential learning through practicum, praxis, demonstration and instruction, specialist guest speakers, language instruction
- Self-directed learning, workshops and online participation, and participation in community of practice/learners

Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is achievement based. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the assessment tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 or better.

Relevant required and recommended readings and resources will be updated annually prior to delivery of the module to ensure currency of the literature and resources. The annual required and recommended reading list will be provided to the students in Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) annual Booklist and Student Module Booklet.
