Prescription
This module aims to give students an introductory understanding of society, culture, identity, family/whanau and bi-cultural and bi-lingual practice and the context in which early childhood education occurs in Aotearoa/New Zealand. It will provide students with techniques and strategies for teaching children from diverse backgrounds, give students an introductory understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it is implemented in early childhood education in Aotearoa/New Zealand, and introduce the concept of personal responsibility to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. These concepts are built on in modules in years two and three.

By the end of this module students will be able to:


1. Articulate the concepts of family, whnau, identity, gender and culture, and describe and
discuss their own culture.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of Te Ao Maori and identify the inter-
relationship between language and culture.

3. Demonstrate an introductory understanding of Te Tiriti Waitangi, its history and key
elements, with a particular emphasis on Tainui.

4. Demonstrate an introductory understanding of how to implement Te Tiriti Waitangi in
practice within early childhood education settings, particularly through using the Aotearoa New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whriki (Ministry of Education, 2017).

5.Develop the skills to apply introductory te reo Maori and tikanga Maori within an early childhood education setting.
Content
Introduction to Te Tiriti Waitangi, Te Whriki, early childhood education regulatory requirements, Whnau/family and identity, introduction to gender issues, introduction to needs based models of family, ecological models of family, different child rearing practices, understanding biculturalism, multiculturalism, Te Ao Mori and Te Reo Mori suitable to the early childhood education teaching environment, introduction to culture and identity, colonisation and Tainui history. Marae protocols (focused on Tainui), participation in a Noho Marae, bicultural communication and Te Reo Mori suitable for the early childhood education teaching environment.

Teaching and Learning Methods

- Lectures, tutorials, literature, reflective practice, experiential learning, praxis, demonstration and instruction, co-taught and team taught sessions, caucus sessions, field trip and language instruction.
- Self-directed learning, workshops and online participation, and participation in a Noho Marae.

Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the achievement-based tasks. The overall mark (of the achievement based tasks) to pass the module must be 50 or better.

Students must also meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement based tasks.
