Prescription
The aim of this module is to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to understand current building construction technologies, materials and finishes, and manufacturing techniques as used in larger scale interior projects. This module will enable students to prepare documentation to apply for resource/building consents for a commercial interior project and to prepare preliminary budgets for a developed design.

On successful completion of this module students will have the knowledge and skills required to:

2.2Demonstrate an understanding of commercial building processes and procedures as practiced in New Zealand
identify current building codes, compliances and regulatory legislation to enable students to fulfil the obligations through their design outcomes
identify and apply the procedures required to meet a variety of building and construction to meet local codes and health and safety obligations
prepare documentation to apply for resource/building consents for a commercial interiors project

2.3Demonstrate an understanding of the purposes of service systems as used in small scale commercial buildings
acquire an understanding and competency in design planning and the selection of fittings appropriate for a range of commercial and complex interior projects, covering the following

2.4Demonstrate an understanding of material and finish selections and componentry for commercial interior design projects
demonstrate an understanding of the selection of specialised materials and finishes appropriate to a range of interior commercial and institutional environments
Compare, analyse, evaluate and select appropriate construction and fitout materials, finishes and techniques to meet building codes and standards
develop skills to design and plan construction detailing for specialised joinery production for commercial fit outs

2.5Describe and explain environmental and sustainable issues affecting commercial interior design fit outs and the impact on users
Demonstrate an understanding of the environmental impact
of materials, their consumption and resource
Discuss and apply an understanding of designing for healthy environments, including offices and other public domains
understand and apply aspects of the health, safety and wellbeing of the occupants and users of commercial interior spaces

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Tutor/s will:
- Establish themes and issues for analysis and discussion.
- Construct models for analysis and discussion of texts, visual works, precedent studies.
- Prescribe structure for working through stages of a project.
- Negotiate topic, workload, and the form of the presentation with students.
- Prescribe exercises to develop drawn, written and oral presentation skills.
- Facilitate students' progress through structured exercises and supervision of regular self-assessment.

Students will:
- Participate in dialogue and identify relevant themes from lectures and readings.
- Develop their understanding of issues explored in texts and visual works.
- Identify areas of interest that form the basis of an area of research, a design project or presentation.
- Participate in collaborative critiques.
- Participate in field trips and site visits.

Grade assessment performed by peers, tutor(s) and guest critics.
Assessment Criteria
To pass this module, students must pass all assessments and accumulate an overall mark of no less than 50.

1) Attendance requirements of the School of Media Arts must be observed.
