Short Course Overview
This course is designed to introduce students to existing practices and procedures inherent in the making of fashion design Products. It also aims to develop students' ability in pattern making and simple concept construction.

2. LEARNING OUTCOMES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

2.1 Develop a process for systematically addressing design situations
Discuss, reflect on and interpret design briefs.
Participate in directed research tasks and practical assignments.
Demonstrate the systematic generation, regeneration, manipulation and development of ideas.
Participate in individual and group analysis of fashion design works.

2.2 Develop vocabularies for 2D drawing and materiality
Consider the role colour and shape plays in fashion product structures.
Employ a vocabulary of marks, textures and tones in pictorial situations.
Observe and record information in drawing and idea development.
Consider and apply the characteristics of specific materials to practical situations.

2.3 Develop knowledge of fashion design and construction techniques
Examine sewing and construction techniques as a conventional mode in fashion design.
Demonstrate concepts of fashion visual communication.
Develop a vocabulary of industrial sewing techniques and controls
Explore materials and fabrication techniques as used in fashion design.
Experiment and refine construction processes using a range of commonly used industrial sewing equipment with woven fabrics.

2.4 Develop basic pattern making and construction techniques
Demonstrate construction of manual patterns to create 3 dimensional items
Consider the construction methods and apply accurate annotations to patterns
Utilise shapes and forms in pattern making structures

2.5 Understand assessment methodology
Develop a vocabulary for describing work.
Demonstrate the ability to interpret and analyse objectives.
Participate in group and class critiques.
Consider and reflect upon self and peer design decisions.
Participate in formative assessment.

3.1 Pattern forms
Structural design.
Exploring formal qualities of pattern manipulation.
Considering construction techniques.

3.2 Pattern Manipulation
Pattern design.
Exploring materials and visualising techniques.
Develop a process of simplification and additions of shapes and strcutures.

3.3 Integration
Combining pattern making with construction of a fashion product.

3.4 Application
Exploring various application.
Talking about materiality, scale, modes of production, colour, composition.
Questioning of function and interpretation.
Applying to different construction skills

4. LEARNING PROCESS
Lecturer prescribes procedures for developing responses to project briefs.
Lecturer prescribes and monitors each stage of a project.
Students undertake directed research tasks in developing content for their own projects.
Lecturer prescribes structure for working through stages of a project.
Lecturer identifies lapses in students process and proposes strategies for addressing the situation.
Lecturer structures and monitors class discussions, eg. lecturer provides set questions for critiques.
Lecturer prescribes exercises to develop written and oral presentation skills.
Students develop written documentation of their work (discussions, decision making and preferences).
Students participate in formative assessment, lecturer provides questions.
Lecturer performs graded assessment.
