Prescription
The purpose of this module enables the student to develop both practical and critical skills in relation to selected genres and styles of creative writing. The student will complete a workbook and a portfolio which will advance their knowledge and practice of creative writing. This module also provides the opportunity for the student to develop a small portfolio of work which explores themes and styles in depth.

Assessment Criteria
To pass this course, students must complete all assignments and accumulate an overall course mark of no less than 50%
Learning Outcomes
2.1 Understand a project development process which integrates cognitive, practical and communication skills
- discuss, identify and evaluate the issues within the project brief
- research, analyse and incorporate negotiated criteria for self-directed projects
- integrate acquired practical, communication and analytical skills in the process of resolving creative writing problems
- individualise a self-critical working process for developing and refining ideas
- show evidence of drawing together and applying skills and knowledge acquired in previous and concurrent courses to selected projects
- adopt independent and interdependent project development processes

2.2 Develop critical skills in the analysis of written text
- explore a wide range of texts by other authors
- demonstrate an understanding of appropriateness of texts for specific purposes or audiences
- employ and develop a critical vocabulary for evaluation and self reflection

2.3 Understand advanced writing techniques
- develop an awareness of styles, point of view, voice and tense
- develop a range of various writing skills and narrative devices
- demonstrate an appreciation of structure, theme and setting

2.4 Develop an individual writing process through exploring structure, style and genre
- analyse and compare structures within a variety of genres
- demonstrate an ability to vary style according to genre and context explore the editing process in the refinement of language, form, characterisation and style

2.5 Understand and appreciate the role of audience
- participate in individual and group critiques as a reader of selected texts
- consider and reflect on the impact of selected texts on the reader
- demonstrate an appreciation of the audience in relation to, and the range of possible readings of, own work

2.6 Understand the value of self-evaluation within the context of professional practice
- demonstrate the ability to explore writing briefs according to both prescribed and individual, negotiated criteria
- consider and reflect upon the relationship between an adopted process and the final product
- continuously self-evaluate performances independent of institutional assessment
- participate in self/peer critiques for ongoing formative assessment
- critically consider, discuss and document self and peer performances for regular graded assessment

2.7 Understand the values, strategies and methodologies which inform current professional practice in a selected domain
- compare, analyse and evaluate selected texts identifying issues relevant to a specific contemporary practice

- compare significant changes in research methods and performance strategies in a specific media context over a specific timeframe
- develop and implement a methodology for the production of work which explicitly applies the contextual analysis of values from a domain

3.1 Identifying “successful writing”
- Analysis of contemporary texts
- Development of critical vocabulary
- Exploration of style, vocabulary and voice and the effects of text on a reader

3.2 Developing critical skills through text production
- Exploration of a variety of genres, styles and structures in journal
- Application of research through exploring structure and style

3.3 Exploring writing
- Discussion of application
- Concept and idea development
- Research methodologies
- Examination of the structure and effect of narrative
- Exploration of structure, style, and word for optimum effect
- Developing an individual voice

3.4 Producing a publishable text
- Development of critical awareness through discussions, self-reflection and reading reviews
- Appreciation of the editing process
- Re-writing
- Refinement of at least one text to publication level
