Learning Outcomes
1: Tie, dress and use knots and friction hitches in tree climbing.
2: Install, use, and compare anchor points and hardware in arboriculture situations
3: Use the static rope ascending system to ascend safely to at least 15 metres and descend safely to the ground
4: Undertake an aerial rescue in a simulated arboriculture situation, where the casualty is on a static rope ascending system.
5: Describe and use work positioning single rope techniques (SRT) to ascend a tree.
6: Describe, demonstrate, install and use a retrievable redirect system.
7: Undertake an aerial rescue in an arboriculture situation using the ‘Counter-weight’ method.

- Knots; double fisherman’s knot, Schwabisch, Distel, klemheist, Valdotain, alpine butterfly
- Knots tied, dressed, used in accordance with workplace procedures
- False crotches; double ringed cambium savers, rope guide, pulley carabiner
- False crotches installed and used in accordance with workplace procedures
- Advantages and disadvantages of friction systems
- Foot lock methods, codes of practice, work place procedures
- Worksite safety and risk mitigation

- Tree access requirements
- Aerial rescue, for a foot lock line, assess line, victim secured, codes of practice, workplace procedures
- Single rope techniques; ascenders, kroll, pantene, petzl stop, handle ascenders, figure eight
- Rope loading problems, advantages of single rope technique and techniques used safely in accordance with workplace procedures.
- Redirect systems; configuration, demonstrated, anchor points, branch/stem strength, compatibility of materials
- Appropriate redirect systems positions installed and used to retrieve in safe manner according to workplace procedures.
- Counter weight aerial rescue, established, victim manipulated through tree, descend safely according to codes of practice and workplace procedures.
Assessment Criteria
The weight of the overall assessment is equally distributed across learning outcomes.
The portfolio of evidence will demonstrate the achievement of the required knowledge, competencies and capabilities across all the learning outcomes.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching and learning methods will be face to face delivery including; workshops, project based interactive tasks, with group sessions, tutorials, on-line learning, work integration, and independent research for the creation of portfolios of evidence of learning.
