Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the physiology and anatomy of trees
2. Describe the growth requirements of plants
3. Explain the biological process and requirements in relation to tree management and care
Content
• External plant parts; roots, stem, leaf, bud, node, internode, bark, crown shape, branching
• Plant cell types and functions
• Plant tissue types; phloem, xylem, meristems, epidermis, storage tissues
• Secondary growth, heartwood, sapwood, reaction growth, cambium
• Morphological structure adaptations; roots, stems, leaves, fruit
• Plant growth processes; photosynthesis, respiration, water movement, nutrient uptake, cell division
• Tree adaptations
• Environmental requirements; temperature, water, nutrition, light.
• Tree requirements in tree management; propagation, planting, growing, training and pruning, harvesting, storage
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. Students must gain a minimum mark of 50% in the achievement-based assessments and meet all the requirements of the competency-based assessments including carrying out all tasks in a safe manner and to industry standard to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement-based assessment tasks.
