Dana Jane Ellaso
International Student – Philippines
Bachelor of Nursing

"Hi, I am Dana, a Filipina studying the Bachelor of Nursing at Wintec in New Zealand.

I envision my future career as helping and creating an impact on people's lives by contributing to the betterment of their healthcare. My goal is to provide safe services and practices to my patients while they experience a vulnerable part of their lives. I want to be someone who inspires hope and contributes to the positive health outcomes of patients that I will handle. I previously studied for a year towards a Bachelor of Medical Technology at FEU-Manila before changing my focus to nursing due to personal experience with a family member. This solidified my interest in caring for people as well as wanting to support my family through having healthcare knowledge.

I've been in New Zealand since the end of 2024, and, as an introvert, initially, it was nerve-racking to be in a new environment, but everything changed as I got to know more about this country and its people. Even though this is my first time travelling internationally, I have never felt lost because Kiwi people are so nice and accommodating. Kiwis are friendly, kind, and accommodating. I have countless experiences showcasing these characteristics, even with just a simple interaction, and it shows how welcoming everyone is. The unique Māori culture greatly influences the culture here. It gives importance to the value of whānau (family), manaakitanga (hospitality), and kotahitanga (togetherness). These values further explain the safe, open, and accepting environment compared to other cultures. It has made me feel freer to express myself than before.

Wintec was the right choice for me because it offers a mix of theoretical learning and hands-on, real-life healthcare experiences. It also has stellar facilities, such as a laboratory, simulation room, equipped classrooms, and computer rooms. While the theoretical side nourishes my skills in collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and cultural safety, the active, student-centred learning strengthens my work individually as well as in group environments. We gain real-life experience through our placements in hospitals, clinics, or rest homes, which allows us to be exposed to an array of healthcare institutions and to learn the processes of different places. Wintec really prepares you to be ready to work professionally, which aligns with my career goal, as I want to work straight after my degree.

The staff here provides extensive support that guides and helps me throughout my studies and personally. They really show how committed they are to seeing you succeed. Services like Manaaki Pūkenga, Academic Learning Advisors, are always there to give you support through peer tutors. You can also access other services for pastoral care and personal and spiritual support. As an international student, having this option makes me feel secure and guided.

Wintec values cultural diversity and celebrates different cultural events. We often have events that unite all students through shared food and activities. This provides a good opportunity to socialise and learn about other cultures, which enriches everyone. Plus, the international student team arranged additional outdoor adventures, especially for international students to enjoy and discover the landscape of New Zealand. Additionally, the location of the City Campus is great because it is accessible, convenient, and balances city life and nature. A short walk from the Campus is Hamilton Lake and the Waikato River, which are great spots for walking, biking, and picnics.

Outdoor adventure in Hamilton and the Waikato region is a great time to unwind your mind and enjoy the environment solo or with friends. There are the Waitomo Caves, Hobbiton, Lake Taupo, and Raglan beaches to enjoy. My friends and I enjoy spending our time doing short hikes, swimming, and picking strawberries in the strawberry farms.

Studying in New Zealand will prepare me for a successful nursing career. The knowledge and skills I gain here will propel me to contribute meaningfully to the healthcare field."
