2Describe and demonstrate patient monitoring, documentation and communication required for hospitalised patients
3Explain and implement key concepts in patient first aid and nursing care of common companion animals

Content
-Medical terminology; introduction to nursing theory
-Creating and maintaining patient records for documentation of patient care
-Patient evaluation, triage and basic first aid techniques for companion animal species; basic health procedures (e.g. clinical exams, nail trims, grooming) and administration of basic treatments for hospitalised patients (SQ injections, tablets, eye/ear/skin medications); pain management
-Applied nutrition for hospitalised patients (calorie requirements / nutritional plans); nutritional assessments, monitoring and therapeutic diets
-Introduction to fluid therapy (physiology and monitoring)
-Intro to pharmacology (modes of action / drug calculations); calculating and preparing medications
-Applied Anatomy and Physiology for disease and/or injury processes
-Professional practice attributes: Compliance with workplace health and safety requirements; knowledge of relevant legislation and animal welfare standards; sustainable practice; effective communication skills; professional and ethical behaviour; cultural recognition and sensitivity; teamwork; accurate record-keeping.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include: tutor facilitated and directed presentations and/or lectures, tutorial sessions, laboratory, practical or workshop sessions and activities , guest speakers from industry, demonstrations, online learning activities, scenarios and case studies, individual project time.
