To provide students with the necessary knowledge, attributes and skills to describe normal behaviour and apply low stress handling techniques to a range of common companion animal species. Includes 40 hours work placement.

3:Apply principles of low-stress handling and restraint for common companion animals

Content
-Introduction to behaviour theory.
-Normal development and behaviour of common companion animals.
-Main behavioural features of reproduction (breeding, pregnancy and parturition).
-Changes in behaviour associated with breeding and parturition.
-Principles of low stress handling theory and practicals .
-Professional practice attributes: Compliance with workplace health and safety requirements; knowledge of relevant legislation and animal welfare standards; sustainable practice; effective communication skills; professional and ethical behaviour; cultural recognition and sensitivity; teamwork; accurate record-keeping.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include: tutor facilitated and directed presentations and/or lectures, practical or workshop sessions and activities, guest speakers from industry, demonstrations, and real scenarios and case studies and work placement
