The aim of this module is to introduce the students to the science of anatomy and physiology as they relate to the human body. Anatomy is the study of the structure of the body and physiology is the study of the function of the body.

On successful completion of this module, it is expected that students will be able to:

1.0 Describe the general structure and organisation of the human body

The terms anatomy, physiology and homeostasis are defined.
Organ systems of the body and their general functions are described.

2.0 Describe the human cardiovascular system

Describe the normal structure and function and major blood vessels.
Describe factors influencing normal heart function, circulation and blood pressure.

3.0 Describe the human musculoskeletal system

Describe the normal structure and function of the bones of the skeleton.
Describe the normal structure and function of the muscular articulations of the skeleton.
Describe the normal structure and function of the muscular system.

4.0 Describe the human respiratory system

Describe the normal structure and function of the respiratory system.

5.0 Describe the nervous system of the human body

Describe the normal structure and function of nervous tissue
Describe the normal structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous system.
Describe the relationship between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system

6.0 Describe the endocrine system of the human body

Describe the normal structure and function of the glands of the endocrine system.

7.0 Describe the integumentary system of the human body in relation to massage

Describe the normal structure and function of the skin.
Describe the normal structure and function of the hair and nails.

8.0 Describe the human lymphatic system

The normal structure and function of the lymphatic system is identified.
Describe the lymph and lymph circulation.
Describe the role of the lymphatic system in the immune response.
