The aim of this core module is to develop skills to critique and engage in debate about subjects of "leading edge" technology research, trends, or issues which have controversial social, cultural or environmental implications within the field of the chosen Endorsement. The module requires the student to demonstrate awareness of the existing body of technology knowledge, and mastery of the associated issues.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Critically analyse issues, trends, or areas of research in technology specific to the student's chosen Endorsement; showing awareness of the technology status quo and using multiple sources of information.
2. Assemble personal ideas and/or opinions with supporting arguments to reach conclusions.
3. Communicate and debate in open forum with an audience of peers, staff and interested public.
4. Critically appraise the learning in the investigation, presentation and debate of a topic in technology and map strategies to assist future personal learning.
Content
- Use of broad information sources, information analysis, reformatting, critical review and evaluation, generation of ideas, professional presentation style and format;

and their application to:

- Current research, trends, and/or issues in technology specific to the student's chosen Endorsement, including Maori perspectives.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, involving face to face delivery and mixed mode delivery.

Face-to-face delivery methods may include, but are not limited to:
- Tutor facilitated and directed presentations
- Small and large group activites and discussions
- Peer presentations and review
- Field trips/Industry visits
- Guest speakers from Industry

Mixed mode delivery methods may include, but are not limited to:
- Individual and small group research of resources available online
- Individual project time

Student's will be introduced to a range of current technology issues in the area of their chosen endorsement and will be expected to research available information in these areas and present their findings and opinions based on these findings. Students will then choose a technology-focussed topic (of their choice or from a list of suitable current issues), investigate it in depth, produce an abstract, and make a presentation of their conclusions in the form of a seminar delivered to staff, students and industry guests. They will be required to defend their conclusions and also attend and contribute to a series of seminars presented by their fellow students.

Activites in this course require students to seek their own readings from the internet, national and international scientific literature, governent publications, local body publications, other. Guidance will be given to assist student's to acquire appropriate resources.
