Prescription
This module aims to develop speaking skills to meet common needs of students at a CEFR A1 level. Students will be able to manage very short, isolated, mainly learnt language patterns and interact in a simple way using repetition at a slower rate of speech, rephrasing and repair. Students will be able to ask and answer simple questions, initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics with limited grammatical control.

Learning Outcomes
Communicate using simple phrases and some very short simple sentences.
Describe very common, everyday things relating to very familiar topics including numbers, quantities, costs and time.
Interact in a simple way asking and answering simple questions on very familiar topics.
Content
Control
-speech rate and pauses, hesitation
-gestures to assist understanding.

-short phrases and some short sentences
-memorized stock expressions, and appropriate courtesy words.

Interaction
-introductions and leave-takings using appropriate formulas
-short conversation openings.

Assessment Criteria
The portfolio is comprised of multiple assessment tasks, not tests alone. Assessment will be in a highly supportive environment (see NZQA/NZCEL Guiding Document). To pass this module, students must attempt and pass all assessment tasks.
