Prescription
This module will develop students' critical knowledge of liberation models that have been used by indigenous communities in order to preserve their unique status as First Nations to secure their human rights, particularly the inherent right to self-determination and sovereignty. Students will critically examine a range of phenomena that have given rise to indigenous liberation movements worldwide.

Learning Outcomes
- Critically analyse key constructs and definitions of liberation to develop and evaluate own definitions.
- Critically evaluate the historical, ideological, socio-economic, political and cultural
phenomena that have given rise to indigenous liberation movements.
- Apply a critical analysis to Western colonisation/imperialism.
- Identify and critically analyse liberation theories, models and practices within an indigenous controlled and developed organisation.

- Native America - e.g. American Indian Movement, Native American Church
- Australia - e.g. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission
- Pacific- Hawaii (e.g. Ka Lahui)
- Aotearoa New Zealand
- Comparison of indigenous international models
- Analysis of a leadership and hierarchy of liberation organisations
- Introduction to Western imperialism and colonisation
- Racism and internalised oppression
- Hegemony/Docility
- Pedagogy of Oppression
- Negotiation of kawa
- Critical Analysis of key concepts, definitions and their interrelationships are examined

Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation.
