Prescription
The aim of this module is for students to develop an in-depth understanding and application of social policy, law and ethics in relation to their cultural and professional identity and counselling practice. At the end of this module students will have gained an understanding of processes and approaches to navigate the diverse Aotearoa New Zealand context.

Learning Outcomes
1. Analyse social policy frameworks in relation to the counselling practice context in Aotearoa New Zealand.
2. Identify legal responsibilities within counselling practice in Aotearoa New Zealand context.
3. Examine the role of and operation of law in Aotearoa New Zealand.
4. Analyse and apply a range of tikanga and ethical frameworks for counselling practice relevant in Aotearoa New Zealand context.

- Historical and contemporary social policy,
- Legal and ethical context of Aotearoa New Zealand
- Legislation and responsibilities for counsellors
- Cultural ethics
- Ethical frameworks (Maaori ethical frameworks, professional ethical codes)
- Tikanga and kawa
Teaching and Learning Strategy
May include: Project-based Learning; Flipped Classroom; Blended Learning; Work-Integrated Learning; Inclusive Practices.
Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation.
Assessment Criteria
The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
