This module promotes students' critical analysis and application of social policy and community development theories. Students will examine and analyse a range of social, community and Maaori development responses in social work contexts.

1. Critically analyse and report on the impact of dominant ideologies on social policy at international, national and local levels
2. Critically examine and discuss the principles and processes of participation, social capital, social cohesion and civil society
3. Critically analyse and evaluate social policy and policy development processes in a bicultural context, using social work frameworks of human rights and social justice at international, national and local levels
4. Evaluate Community Development models as responses to social, cultural, political, economic and environmental developments in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally.
5. Create a community development response to an emerging social need that demonstrates integration of theory and practice

- Critical analysis of social policy
- Critical analysis of policy making processes using social justice and human rights frameworks
- Neoliberal ideology and globalisation
- Principles and processes of participation, social capital, civil society and social cohesion
- International models of social and community development
- Community led development in Aotearoa New Zealand
- Maaori models of Community development and development initiatives
- Community Collaboration Models
- Asset based community development
- The use of social media in mobilising communities
- Community development led responses to traumatic events
Teaching and Learning Strategy
May include: Project-based Learning; Flipped Classroom; Blended Learning; Work-Integrated Learning; Inclusive Practices.
Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation.

An extended reading list will be supplied by the tutor at commencement of the course. This will be updated annually.
Assessment Criteria
The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
