Prescription
This module aims to develop listening skills to meet academic needs of students at a CEFR mid B2 level. They will be able to understand standard spoken language on most concrete, abstract, familiar and unfamiliar topics normally encountered in an academic context.

Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate understanding of a spoken text and process information in English for academic purposes.
Identify gist, detail, purposes and key ideas and distinguish between fact and opinion in extended discussions on familiar academic topics.
Extract and reproduce key information from announcements, media broadcasts, presentation and/or lectures including abstract and concrete topics encountered in academic life.
Content
Phonological features
-intonation, pitch and/or stress can affect meaning
-feelings, moods, attitudes, important points and opinions expressed through stress, pitch and intonation.

Range
-ideas, arguments and descriptions expressed through complex sentence forms
-some lower frequency vocabulary and expressions relating to everyday life and current events.

Register
-degrees of formality used by speakers in different types of utterances in everyday and less familiar situations.

Gist
-main ideas in longer but clearly structured announcements, conversations and discussions on familiar and unfamiliar concrete and abstract topics.

Detail
-points of detail from longer but clearly structured texts on familiar and unfamiliar topics and on both concrete and abstract topics.
