Level 2 - Service Sector Waikato Trades Academy

The Service Industries Vocational Pathway provides a wide range of opportunities for young people with great communication and social skills. Employment opportunities include hospitality, hairdressing, beauty, retail, or sports and recreation.

This programme consists of three modules: cookery, hairdressing, and beauty therapy.

For the year two programme in this Vocational Pathway, students choose two of the year one modules to specialise in.

Note: Not all year two programmes will be available in Thames.


Introduction to Service Sector Level 2

Vocational Pathway: Service Industries

Programme Modules: Cookery, Hairdressing, and Beauty Therapy

NCEA Level: Level 2 (Level 3 in year 2)

Number of Credits: 19

Duration of Programme:  February to November with option to re-enrol for second year in August

Programme Structure: 1 day per week (8:30am3:00pm) during the school term

Location: Depending on your closest location, it will be one of the following:


  • City Campus: Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy 
  • Rotokauri Campus: Cookery **Students studying this programme in Thames will travel to Hamilton for their Cookery rotation


  • Wintec Thames Campus: Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy ** This will include some organised travel to Hamilton for specialist equipment use during the Hairdressing and Beauty rotations.

Cost: Free to the student

Transport: To be arranged with your school and covered by WTA (if applicable)

Year two entry criteria: To move on to year two you will need to have completed 80% of the available credits in year one, and 100% of the available credits in both of your chosen year two modules. Candidates who do not meet these criteria may be accepted at the discretion of the WTA.
