Charles Riddle is a Principal Academic Staff Member in the School of Media Arts specialising in journalism and multi-media communication. His roles include Programme Coordinator for the journalism pathway.

Industry Experience, Affiliations and Achievements

Charles graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) from the University of Cape Town. He initially worked at The Cape Argus a large daily newspaper in South Africa before transferring as a foreign correspondent to London for the Argus Group. In 1985 he was appointed lecturer in journalism at Rhodes University, where he edited the leading journalism publication The Rhodes University Journalism Review.

Charles joined Wintec in 1995 and has since won three teaching awards at the institute. “I enjoy working with students in close engagement with the local media industry, searching out opportunities for publication of student work, internships, and careers.”

Research Activity

Charles favours documentary research which incorporates project –based teaching. His students are major  co-authors of many of his research publications, including the Fieldays Exhibitor magazine, the Waikato Independent blog, and a number of books including Village on the Hill: Celebrating 125 years of Waikato Hospital (2011); The New Wave: Hamilton’s Migrant Community (2015); and Seven Stars: Matariki (forthcoming).

Research at the School of Media Arts​

The School of Media Arts operates across a rich range of applied media practice and theory; graphic design, digital design, contemporary art, photography, moving image, creative writing, interior design, fashion design, music, journalism, public relations and advertising. The breadth of the school’s applied and academic knowledge, combined with a growing postgraduate programme and industry/community engagement offers a unique platform for a productive research culture.
