Eric started his career as a Horticulturist working at various local authorities in his home country of South Africa. He was promoted to assistant General Manager and later became the Head of Department of Parks and Urban Environmental Planning. 

At this time he also completed a Master’s Degree in Administration while working in the ‘green industries’ discipline. 

Eric pursued an academic career at the Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa after completion of his master’s degree and he was promoted to senior lecturer after completing a Doctorate in Natural Sciences in 2002.  

He immigrated to New Zealand in 2008 and he accepted the position of Parks Asset and Planning Manager with Rotorua Lakes Council. A position that he held for three years before taking up his current position in 2011 as Horticulture Team manager for Wintec.  

Eric is a member of the New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA), Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture (RNZIH) and the South African Association of Public Administration Management. 

Eric lives in Cambridge with his wife. 


The Wintec Māori Achievement award in 2014, acknowledging the contribution to enhancing Māori and Pacific learner success.

Research activity

Eric has a great passion for education and research. He is particularly interested in conservation related issues that specifically relate to biodiversity.  

He acted as supervisor to several PhD and master’s degree students after completing his PhD in 2002 (something he continues to do to this day) 

Eric published numerous ‘socio – science’ related articles in various accredited journals
