Career/further opportunities:
Graduates of this programme will be able to work independently as advanced tradespeople in their chosen discipline in the mechanical engineering, fabrication, construction, manufacturing, mechanical building services, refrigeration, and air conditioning industries. Specific roles may include specialist engineer, process champion, maintenance engineering supervisor, predictive maintenance specialist, team leader, steel construction foreman, site supervisor/manager, technical advisor, and welding supervisor.
Graduates intending to become certified engineering technicians should complete the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice (with strands in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering) (Level 6).

Entry criteria
General Academic Admission
Candidates are required to have gained one of the following qualifications:
- New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4) with strands in Fitting and Machining, General Engineering, Machining, Maintenance Engineering, Metal Forming, and Toolmaking; or
- New Zealand Certificate in Engineering Fabrication (Trade) (Level 4) with strands in Heavy Fabrication, Light Fabrication, and Steel Construction; or
- New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Building Services (Trade) (Level 4); or
- New Zealand Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Trade) (Level 4); or
- Another recognised New Zealand Level 4 engineering-related qualification; or
- Equivalent skills and knowledge.
Selection Criteria
- Candidates must be in employment and be working in a mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing or fabrication environment with access to relevant equipment, systems and processes.
- Candidates may be required to participate in an interview process.
- To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must by physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme.
English Language Requirements
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5.5, with no individual band score lower than 5; or equivalent.
