  • Distance learning, with a short practical block course at Wintec Rotokauri Campus, Hamilton

This programme is primarily delivered by distance learning, with a short practical block course component which students will be required to attend on site at Wintec.

This programme will provide you with learning and skills in advance of those they have already gained in other relevant Level 4 qualifications, focussed on two related industrial disciplines/strands – Process Control and Process Automation.

You'll develop knowledge and skills in important core topic areas including; instrumentation and automation safety systems, hardware and software systems, and selection and specification of control and automation equipment for process control or process automation systems.

You will also develop in-depth knowledge related to their chosen strand, and they will be able to work at Senior Technician level in either the Process Control or Process Automation fields.

Entry Requirements:

  • It is recommended that candidates will have completed the New Zealand Certificate in Industrial Measurement and Control (Theory) (Level 4) and the New Zealand Certificate in Industrial Measurement and Control (Practice) (Level 4); or
  • National Certificate in Industrial Measurement and Control (Level 4); or
  • A relevant New Zealand certificate in electrical theory and practice at level 4; or
  • Can demonstrate experience and skills equivalent to the above
  • Alternatively, candidates who have training and experience in mechanical aspects of industrial control or automation processes may apply for and be accepted into the programme.

Selection Criteria:
  • All candidates will be interviewed for suitability for the programme. Should places in the programme become limited, selection will be based on: 
  • Academic history and prior relevant qualifications gained;
  • Relevant recent and current work experience.

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score in the academic band of 6.0, with no individual band score lower than 5.5; or equivalent.

Career/further opportunities:

You'll be equipped with the skills, knowledge and attributes to work as a Senior Technician in the Process Control or Process Automation fields servicing primary process industries such as pulp and paper, dairy, petrochemicals, steel and aluminium, wood products, extractives, food products, energy generation and distribution, water and wastewater, and utilities.
