Summary

This one-year course will help you develop your technical knowledge, as well as your practical skills relating to many aspects of building and the construction industry. Our graduates go on to become carpenters, builders, project managers, and much more.

Career/further opportunities

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to work as a labourer or an apprentice. With additional training and/or experience, they may go on to further roles in the construction industry such as carpenter, plasterer, painter, or roofer. They may wish to register as a Licensed Building Practioner.

Entry criteria

General admission

There is open entry to this programme although you must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success.

English language requirements

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5, with no individual band score lower than 5; or equivalent.

What you will need

As part of the Centre for Trades Safety Guidelines, you will be required to wear NZ-approved safety steel cap footwear at all times while in the workshop. NZ-approved safety glasses will also be required to be worn, which we will provide to you at induction. 

As the course progresses, you may need to purchase some basic tooling that we will cover in detail at induction. We also recommend you bring a notebook, laptop or tablet with you. We recommend you wait to recieve more details at induction before purchasing any items.

MPTT students, please note that all tools and safety boots will be provided to you.

He reo pōwhiri, your official welcome to Wintec

Tēnei te mihi mahana ki a koe e piki nei, e kake nei ki te Kuratini o Waikato.

You are warmly invited to attend the official welcome to Wintec for all new students, staff and whānau (family) at either our marae, Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa or Rotokauri campus. The pōwhiri is a welcoming ceremony involving mihimihi (speeches), waiata (singing), and will conclude with kai timotimo (light refreshments). Please gather at the campus hubs, and a staff member will guide you through our pōwhiri.
