Summary
Students in this programme will advance their ability to innovate in the workplace allowing them to immerse themselves into the enterprise environment and gain a postgraduate qualification whilst in employment. This programme offers an accessible academic and professional career development opportunity in research and innovation at postgraduate level, relevant to all disciplines.
There are no formal classes. Students will be guided through the programme by an academic lead supervisor and will also be paired with an industry mentor. Students will have developed a research plan in the first part of the programme and will be spending at least 3 days a week in business, working on the project.
Students will also be embedded in our community of practice, supported by supervision and mentorship, with access to a national and international network of researchers. Students of the programme will be part of a group of fellow students who will share experiences and knowledge through a dedicated online platforms as well as monthly forums.

Students will advance skills and expertise highly valued in a workplace or research environment and will be able to research and develop projects, and lead change initiatives in a business environment.
Graduates will be able to use this qualification for their professional development and to develop the skills required to undertake new roles within a business or other enterprise group.
Graduates may choose to progress to doctoral study at New Zealand and overseas institutions.

Entry criteria
General admission
- Candidates have gained the Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation with a B (65%) grade average or higher, or
- have gained either:
- An undergraduate degree conferred by a New Zealand tertiary education institution with a mark average of B (65%) or above in the final year of study; or
- A qualification, industry experience and/or assessment of prior learning approved as equivalent by the Programme Committee.
Selection criteria
- For candidates applying as per general admission with previously gained Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation, candidates must:
- Have an accepted research project plan/proof of concept or business plan.
- Have had their research project plan, business plan or proof of concept approved by Wintec and by an incubator mentor or an industry partner for implementation.
- Sign appropriate agreements and be willing to comply with agreed protocols related to the research project.
- For candidates applying directly under clause 1.1b criteria, candidates must:
- Demonstrate the ability to undertake independent practical and theoretical research at a minimum level equivalent to a level 7 Bachelor’s research project. This will be demonstrated by successfully completing all three components of the Training Needs Analysis (TNA) with 75% or above. The TNA consists of:
- The Online Training Needs Analysis.
- Submission of a professional research evidence portfolio or CV including personal statement.
- An entry interview with the Programme Co-Postgraduate (or delegate) and one approved academic supervisor of the Postgraduate Certificate.
- Have a minimum of two years of relevant, professional experience evidenced in a portfolio, or a portfolio of industry-embedded innovation or entrepreneurship projects that demonstrate the ability to co-create or be fit for purpose.
- Have a research theme or problem approved by Wintec Te Pūkenga.
- Sign appropriate agreements and to be willing to comply with agreed protocols related to the research project.
- Submit all their application documentation in English or Te Reo Māori.
- Demonstrate the ability to undertake independent practical and theoretical research at a minimum level equivalent to a level 7 Bachelor’s research project. This will be demonstrated by successfully completing all three components of the Training Needs Analysis (TNA) with 75% or above. The TNA consists of:
- Entry into the programme is subject to adequate resourcing; the provision of academic supervision, industry mentorship, pastoral care as well as technical resources.
- All application and enrolment decisions will be presented and ratified by the Centre’s Programme Committee or delegated authority.
- Entry onto the Level 9 module is subject to applicants passing the two prerequisite Level 8 modules with a 65% grade average or higher.
English language requirements
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.5, with no individual band score lower than 6.0; or equivalent.
