Summary
This programme provides opportunities for role development in advanced nursing practice. It involves theoretical knowledge development as well as clinical and ethical learning experiences, with an aim to build capacity to respond to increasingly diverse populations and complex health environments.
A candidate may take up to four years to complete the Master of Nursing programme.

Our graduates
Whānau is everything for four Māori Master's graduates
Four Māori nurses have graduated with Master's degrees from Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec), and all agree that time is the biggest challenge, and a supportive network means everything.
Postgraduate support
The Postgraduate Office at Wintec has been created to support postgraduate students in their studies and research by providing dedicated resources and advice. Wintec also has a dedicated Research Office, which is the hub of research at Wintec and caters to all researchers, both staff and students.
Career/further opportunities
Graduates may be employed in advanced nursing practice positions such as nurse practitioner, as management, research, education, clinical leaders, independent practice, or enter into further study at Doctorate level.
Completed written work can be used as part of the application for registration as a Nurse Practitioner.

Entry criteria
General academic admission
a) Candidates are required to have:
- A Wintec Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing, with a grade average of B or better, or
- Equivalent. Candidates from another tertiary organisation must have an equivalent qualification with a grade average of B or better and deemed to have reached the learning outcomes of the compulsory modules of the Wintec Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing programme.
b) All candidates are required to have graduate nursing experience in the health sector demonstrated in a professional portfolio.
Selection Criteria
a) Candidates must complete their application for selection at least two months prior to the commencement of the programme. Applications received after this point will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
b) Candidates for the Master of Nursing Pathway 1 - Nurse Practitioner, Pathway 2 - Advance Practice, must also meet the following additional requirements for entry to the programme:
- Hold a current New Zealand practising certificate as a Registered Nurse and be in good standing with the Nursing Council of New Zealand; and
- A minimum of 3 years' equivalent full-time relevant practice within the past 5 years, with a least 1 year of the 3 in full-time practice in New Zealand. For Pathway 1, this must be in the area of practice they are intending to practice in as a nurse practitioner.
c) Additionally, candidates for entry to the NURS902 Nurse Practitioner practicum must have:
- A collaborative working relationship within an interprofessional team and the support of a designated authorised prescriber (DAP), (a registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner with current indemnity insurance) as a mentor who will provide clinical supervision for prescribing practice, and
- An agreement to undertake the practicum within an organisation that supports nurse prescribing, and
- Identified two areas of clinical practice in which to develop the nurse practitioner role, one of which will be the intended area of prescribing practice. One experience must be undertaken with a clinical supervisor who is a nurse practitioner.
English language requirements
a) Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 7.0 across all bands; or
b) Equivalent.
