Summary
The Diabetes Care and Management programme is designed to provide registered health professionals with the knowledge and skills required to provide regular care to people at risk of or with diabetes.
The Midland Health region has identified Type 2 and increasingly Type 1 diabetes as a significant health concern, particularly for Māori and Pacific Island adults. In addition, cardiovascular risk assessment is an identified Ministry of health target. The prevention and treatment of diabetes is a focus of the Strategic Plans for the District Health Boards providing opportunities for you in this rewarding area.
Students living a long distance from campus may need to download Zoom onto their laptop or device. If this is the case, your tutor will advise you.
What you will learn
The programme, informed by the National Diabetes Nursing Knowledge and Skills Framework (2009), provides the health professional with an increased blend of knowledge and skills required to competently and confidently plan care for a person with diabetes / cardiovascular disease and provide regular care to people at risk of, or those who experience, diabetes. Health professionals will develop critical thinking through the exploration of problem-based learning, evidenced-based theory, reflective and reflexive practice perspectives.

Graduate Opportunities
The in Diabetes Care and Management course provides an opportunity for you to continue your professional development and to gain knowledge and skills in a significant and growing area of health care.
This qualification will be valued in both primary and secondary clinical contexts. You would be able to continue to develop your expertise in this area of health to become a speciality diabetes nurse. Once graduated you may progress from the generalist education provided in the Diabetes Care to the Level 8 Specialist Diabetes education within the Wintec Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing programme.

Entry criteria
Candidates are required to:
- hold a New Zealand health qualification as a registered nurse or health professional; and
- have a current practising certificate; and
- be working in positions or have access to an appropriate client base of at least 16 hours per week.
- Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.5 with no individual band score lower than 6.0; or
- equivalent.
