Summary

This programme covers advanced business administration and computing skills for clerical, administrative or secretarial roles. Throughout the semester students will have the opportunity to put their learning into practice through work experience in a local business.

What you will learn

In this course, you will learn the skills and knowledge to:

Learn within a workplace environment 

The Wintec Centre for Business and Enterprise provides a simulated office setting, which means you learn skills and knowledge within an environment that reflects a real-life office setting.

Our highly qualified, industry-experienced tutors will guide you through the latest versions of software such as Microsoft Office as well as introducing you to a range of relevant web-based tools and applications.

As part of the course, you will undertake a work placement in an organisation.

Scheduling and workload

As a general guideline, you are expected to attend classes up to 16 hours per week (as a full-time student). Scheduled classes are usually between 8am to 5pm. In addition, you are expected to complete some self-directed study and/or work placement hours.

Career/further opportunities

By completing this programme will be ready to work in office-related jobs such as a receptionist, office junior, administrator, records officer or data processor.

Entry criteria

Applicants can gain entry to this programme by meeting one of the following criteria:

General admission
  • 40 credits at NCEA Level 1; including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits;
  • Or a recognised equivalent; a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2 or above.

Special admission
Applicants who are at least 20 years of age or older who do not meet the general admission requirements above is eligible for special admission. We work to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme. 

Discretionary admission
Applicants who are not yet 20 years of age and do not meet the general admission requirements stated above may be eligible for discretionary admission. In assessing whether to grant discretionary admission the primary focus will be on the applicant’s ability to demonstrate a likelihood to succeed in the programme.

English language requirements
International applicants are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5.5, with no individual band score lower than 5 from one test taken in the last two years, or equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

Returning students

Please check your timetable for your first day.

If you are a new student, it is compulsory for you to attend your first day (induction) and we welcome you to bring whānau and friends to support you. You will be introduced to your tutors and new classmates, be given an overview of this programme, and receive a personalised timetable.

What you will need

Please bring a pen and paper with you on your first day. There are no required textbooks, and workbooks will be provided to you during class.

You have the option of bringing your own device (laptop or tablet). We strongly encourage this as you will be able to follow along more closely in some lectures and classes. All students also have access to computer labs and computers in the hub.

He reo pōwhiri, your official welcome to Wintec

Tēnei te mihi mahana ki a koe e piki nei, e kake nei ki te Kuratini o Waikato.

You are warmly invited to attend the official welcome to Wintec for all new students, staff and whānau (family) at either our marae, Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa or Rotokauri campus. The pōwhiri is a welcoming ceremony involving mihimihi (speeches), waiata (singing), and will conclude with kai timotimo (light refreshments). Please gather at the campus hubs, and a staff member will guide you through our pōwhiri.
