Amenity horticulture
Do you like working outdoors, love variety and do not see yourself in an office? Grow your green thumb and develop the hands-on skills, as well as specific technical knowledge to thrive in the horticulture industry.
Our General Horticulture (Level 3) course will see you gain fundamental skills in plant growing systems and environments. Progressing onto our amenity horticulture programmes further explores the care and maintenance of parks, gardens and open spaces. You will build the knowledge, training and skills to care for public and private gardens, parks and open spaces while also experiencing the benefit of learning at the beautiful Hamilton Gardens Campus.
Amenity horticulture graduates contribute to the community and society through:
- The supervision of street planting and maintenance programmes,
- assisting and leading the care of residential and commercial gardens and lawns,
- planning community revegetation and regeneration projects,
- managing contracted green spaces.
Progression
Typically you will study our horticulture programmes over two years. This structure develops the skills and knowledge to become assistant or lead amenity horticulturalists, plant collection assistants, turf apprentices, amenity team leaders or contractors.
Studying the Applied Horticulture Services (Level 3) Amenity strand, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of the industry over one semester. Following on, the 12-month Advanced Horticulture Services (Level 4) Amenity course will allow you to be qualified to be a team leader in an amenity garden situation.
