What do you enjoy about teaching/your job?
What I enjoy most about my role is being part of a team committed to the health, welfare and happiness of animals, which is also a value I hold dearly.
What do you love about your area?
I love working in a rural setting, surrounded by cows and horses, as well as our in-house guinea pigs, rabbits and hens. It is a beautiful setting for our animal technology department to be in and for me to work from.
Tell us about your experience in the industry
From as far back as I remember, my family and I always volunteered for the SPCA, whether it was cleaning the facilities at the shelter, collecting donations from the public, going door to door on their annual charity drive, or taking part in fundraising events. As an adult, my own family and I have fostered many kittens and mother cats, walked dogs and helped on various weekends cleaning cages and providing enrichment for the animals in the SPCA. We have recently adopted (actually they adopted us) two very busy wee kittens from the SPCA and they are now part of our whānau. We also support Paws for Life, a local rescue for companion animals.
What keeps you busy outside of your work?
I have spent most of my life researching whakapapa for myself and others. This field is my passion, and my family tree goes back over a thousand years. I have recently discovered a family connection to new areas previously unresearched by me, from Rangiaowhia in the Waikato right through to Sápmi in Finland; I now have a lot of new learning to do, which I am very excited about.
