Prescription
To provide students with the necessary knowledge, attributes and skills to safely handle rural animals and perform a range of common rural animal health procedures, including administration of remedies where appropriate, in a rural setting. Includes 40 hours work placement in a rural or mixed veterinary clinic setting.

1:Safely handle and restrain a range of rural animals in a rural environment
2:Manage rural animal diagnostic sample collection, testing and dispatch in accordance with best practice and established protocols
3:Safely perform a range of rural animal health procedures in accordance with best practice
4:Utilise the appropriate decontamination and/ or disinfection methods to maintain a hygienic animal environment in a rural setting
5Maintain appropriate standards of professional behaviour and practice in the workplace
Content
-Animal handling and restraint; animal behaviour (rural animals to include cattle (beef and dairy), sheep, deer, goats, pigs, etc.)
-Basic animal health procedures; administration of remedies
-Collection, testing and dispatch of animal diagnostic samples
-Hygiene; disinfectant, antiseptics, decontamination
-Professional practice attributes: Compliance with workplace health and safety requirements; knowledge of animal welfare standards and relevant legislation; sustainable practices; effective communication skills; cultural recognition and sensitivity; professional and ethical behaviour; teamwork; accurate record-keeping.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include:
-Practical - laboratory; practical or workshop sessions and activities; demonstrations; field trips/work experience on farm
-Theory - includes web-supported tutor facilitated/directed presentations; lectures and tutorials; group activities; peer presentations and review; group/individual research; online learning activities; case studies; guest speakers; projects
