To provide students with the necessary knowledge, attributes and skills to perform technical animal health procedures in accordance with health, safety and legal requirements. Includes 80 hours work placement in a rural or mixed veterinary clinic setting.

1:Perform technical animal health procedures safely in line with current best practice, animal welfare standards and relevant legislation
2:Identify and respond to the adverse consequences or complications of routine animal health procedures
3:Provide appropriate and relevant rural animal technician advice using effective communication skills and a range of media
4:Maintain appropriate standards of professional behaviour and practice in the workplace
Content
-Routine procedures carried out by technicians, including disbudding, reproductive manipulation, dehorning, blood sampling
-Equine handling
-Safety and legal requirements of procedures
-Adverse consequences of routine procedures - identification and prevention
-Professional practice attributes: Compliance with workplace health and safety requirements; knowledge of animal welfare standards and relevant legislation; sustainable practices; effective communication skills; cultural recognition and sensitivity; professional and ethical behaviour; teamwork; accurate record-keeping.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include:
-Practical - laboratory; practical or workshop sessions and activities; demonstrations; field trips/work experience/industry placement
-Theory - includes web-supported tutor facilitated/directed presentations; lectures and tutorials; group activities; peer presentations and review; group/individual research; online learning activities; case studies; guest speakers

Assessment 2Professional Practice: Observation and Peer ReviewPass
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. The portfolio is comprised of multiple assessment tasks. To pass this module all tasks must be submitted and an overall minimum pass mark of 50 is required. Students must also meet all the requirements of the competency based tasks and professional practice assessment to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement based tasks.
