To provide students with the knowledge of rural animal health and husbandry to maintain rural animals in an ideal welfare state in the rural environment. Includes 20 hours of work placement in a rural or mixed veterinary clinic setting.

1:Identify common rural animal diseases and apply appropriate treatment options that are within the scope of practice of a rural animal technician
2:Analyse best practice management systems for nutrition and breeding of rural animals
3:Explain the use of complementary and integrative animal health techniques in sustainable farming
Content
-Common infectious diseases; nutritional diseases; treatment options within the scope of the rural animal technician role
-Fertilizer and impact on rural animal health
-Identification of rural animal breeds; reproduction and rearing
-Organic and biological farming; sustainable farming practices; complementary and integrative animal health techniques
-Professional practice attributes: knowledge of animal welfare and relevant legislation; effective communication skills; accurate record-keeping
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include:
-Practical - laboratory; practical or workshop sessions and activities; demonstrations; field trips/industry visits; projects.
-Theory - includes web-supported tutor facilitated/directed presentations; lectures and tutorials; group activities; peer presentations and review; group/individual research; online learning activities; case studies; guest speakers
Assessment Criteria
Assessment 1Portfolio of evidence 100
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. The portfolio is comprised of multiple assessment tasks. To pass this module all tasks must be submitted and an overall minimum pass mark of 50 is required. Students must also meet all the requirements of the competency based tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement based tasks.
