To provide students with the necessary knowledge of New Zealand farming and pasture systems and the implications for animal health and husbandry. Includes 40 hours work placement in a farm-related setting.

1:Discuss the impact of different farming and pasture systems in New Zealand on animal health and husbandry
2:Describe the commonly used feeds in relation to their nutritional value and use in rural animal husbandry
3:Identify the nutritional requirements of rural animals in relation to seasonal variation, life stage and production
4:Maintain appropriate standards of professional behaviour and practice in the workplace
Content
-Farming and pasture systems; grass growth and grass feed value changes through the year
-Methods of feed conservation and the impact of feed quality; systems for controlling feed quality and availability; nutritional value of fodder species and supplements and their place in the farming year; analysis of feeds; basic feed budgets
-Common rural animal housing systems used in New Zealand farming
-Professional practice attributes: Compliance with workplace health and safety requirements; knowledge of animal welfare standards and relevant legislation; sustainable practices; effective communication skills; cultural recognition and sensitivity; professional and ethical behaviour; teamwork; accurate record-keeping.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include:
-Practical - laboratory; practical or workshop sessions and activities; demonstrations; field trips/industry placement
-Theory - includes web-supported tutor facilitated/directed presentations; lectures and tutorials; group activities; peer presentations and review; group/individual research; online learning activities; case studies; guest speakers; projects
