To provide students with the necessary knowledge, attributes and skills to apply basic first aid to companion animals, maintain a hygienic environment and identify signs of ill health associated with common diseases and parasites and their control. Includes 40 hours work experience in Animal House.

Describe and apply appropriate methods for maintaining a hygienic animal environment.
Explain and apply basic concepts in first aid and home-based care of common companion animals.
Identify a range of conditions and the prevention strategies to maintain health of common companion animals and changes associated with ill health.
Maintain appropriate standards of professional behaviour and practice in the workplace.
Content
-Maintain a hygienic environment
-Identification and prevention of zoonotic disease
-Identify signs of ill health
-Provide basic animal first aid to common companion animals, including cats, dogs, rabbits and rodents
-Respond to an animal emergency for common companion animals
-Relevant codes of practice for welfare
-Standards of professional practice and behaviour
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include:
-Practical - laboratory; practical or workshop sessions and activities; demonstrations; field trips/industry visits, projects.
-Theory - includes web-supported tutor facilitated/directed presentations; lectures and tutorials; group activities; peer presentations and review; group/individual research; online learning activities; case studies; guest speakers; projects.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. Students must gain a minimum mark of 50% in the achievement-based assessments and meet all requirements of the competency-based assessments to pass this module. The final grade will be based on the marks for the achievement-based assessment tasks.
