Prescription
The aim of this module is to provide the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to apply the principles of sound nutrition practice to optimise a client's goals. During this module the student will develop the ability to work with clients and provide nutrition advice with regards to weight-loss, muscle gain and improve health. These skills provide the student with an adequate base to enable them to effectively provide basic nutrition advice and counselling.

- Upon successful completion of this module, it is expected that students will be able to:
1.0 Describe and explain the nutritional recommendations and guidelines for healthy eating
and exercise performance.
- Identify the personal trainer's scope of practice and discuss their relationship with
associated health professionals (particularly dieticians and qualified nutritionists)
- Prescribe nutritional guidelines for healthy eating and sport performance
- Give personalised nutritional advice under the guidance of a registered nutritionist or
dietician.
- Analyse, interpret and communicate clinical assessment results to client(s)
2.0 Demonstrate basic analytical skills in assessing the nutritional status of an individual
- Discuss and identify specific client goals and relevant timeframes
- Dietary collection methods are performed and their limitations detailed.
- Food diaries are interpreted and assessed and calculations of energy values are
described.
- Nutritional problem areas and appropriate solutions are discussed.
3.0 Analyse common myths, fads and fallacies associated with food and exercise nutrition.
- Alternative eating patterns are examined and recommendations for individuals are
discussed.
- Dietary supplements and ergogenic aids are described.
- The basic skills required to assess the nutritional claims of a nutritional supplement are
demonstrated.
4.0 Describe nutritional strategies for optimising body composition goals
- Nutrition programmes for optimising exercise performance and long-term health goals of
individual's are designed.
- Ability to report and communicate results of assessments in both scientific and 'user friendly'
terms to clients is demonstrated.
- Ability to evaluate self, nutrition programmes and client response is demonstrated.
