Assessment Criteria
Assessment is by tests, assignments and practical projects.

Students must attempt all assessments and Students need to attain a mark of 50 or above in their overall grade to obtain a pass.

Content
A review of;
Site development principles and sequencing.
Working drawings, dimensioning, processes

Introduction to Land Surveying and Levelling
Site surveying equipment
Surveying using tape measure and dumpy level.
Surveying by triangulation.
Locating features and the effects of slopes.
Plans, scales and contours.
Interpretation of title plans.
Location of underground and overhead services.


Considerations for drainage
Technical requirements for stormwater, and drainage
Principles of drainage
Calculation of runoff.
Drainage materials and systems.
Design and installation requirements for drainage systems.
Maintenance requirements.

Hard surfaces.
Areas and volumes of geometric shapes and offsets
Base courses, cloths, edging and compaction.
Concrete construction methods, reinforcing, additives and exposed aggregate.
Paving materials, methods and laying.
Loose materials.
Tarmac and other surfaces.
Steps and ramps; designs and installation.

Exterior timber construction.
Legal and technical requirements for timber structures.
Design considerations for decks, fences, furniture (seating), gazebos and pergolas.
Design of, and construction considerations for, the following outdoor landscape features (made from above materials)
Decks, fences, furniture & fittings, gates, gazebos, pergolas, ramps, retaining walls, roofing, screens, steps, walls.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course the student will be able to:
1Categorize the common sequence of events in a landscape development, and the working drawings and documents that go with this process.
2Accurately survey a simple site using a tape measure, Dumpy, Abney and Lazer levels and then extrapolate the survey information into accurate scale plans. o.
3Calculate areas, volumes and quantities for development of a simple landscape site
4Describe the installation requirements for landscape drainage and design a simple system.
5Specify the design & installation requirements for pedestrian hard surfaces and those for a range of vehicle surfaces, including driveways, turning areas, and parking areas.
6Categorize Landscape structures requiring Building Consent and draw construction drawings to New Zealand Building Standards for simple landscape structures
i.Range: Decks, fences, furniture, gates, , pergolas, ramps, retaining walls, , screens, steps, walls.

7Safely use and care for hand and power tools appropriate to landscape, and construct common features in landscape projects.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching and learning methods will include theory classes, tutorial sessions, practical sessions, group projects, written assignments, oral & practical and written tests.
